A special committee named by Premier Levi Eshkol to work out a compromise formula on cost-of-living allowance payments was reported today to as nearing agreement and ending the threat of a coalition crisis.
The National Religious Party and the Independent Liberals opposed any increases in allowance payments or in wages, in accordance with a proposal worked out by the Mapai-Achdut Avodah alignment. The leftist Mapam had fought for full payment of the allowances and a five percent wage increase. The new formula reportedly was offered by the religious bloc and the Independent Liberals, which called for a token wage increase for low-salaried workers.
