Israeli officials said today that the situation in neighboring Syria, where troops staged a surprise revolt against the United Arab Republic regime of President Nasser, was being closely watched but declined any other comment.
Diplomatic sources said that the information received on the outbreak did not give a clear picture on the extent of the uprising. The same sources said there did not spear to be any link between the revolt and the air invasion last night of Israel by enemy planes which were driven off by Israeli interceptors after a brief clash.
(In Cairo, President Nasser declared that the revolt was as serious as the 1956 Suez invasion and announced he had ordered the Egyptian troops stationed in Syria to crush the rebellion.)
