Israeli President Moshe Katsav called Syrian President Bashar Assad an anti-Semite. In a speech welcoming Pope John Paul to Syria, Assad blamed Israel for oppressing Arabs and compared it to the way the Jews had “betrayed” Jesus and the Prophet Mohammad.
