Leading Israelis are not pleased with the speech delivered this week in the United States by Secretary of State John Foster Dallas on the Arab-Israel issue following his return from the Middle East, the New York Times reports today in a cable from Tel Aviv.
Some Israelis were impressed by the disproportionately great amount of attention he gave to Israeli-Arab relations, the correspondent reports. Others were surprised by what they thought was his apologetic attitude toward the Arabs, reflected in the phrase that “the United States should seek to allay the deep resentment against it that has resulted from the creation of Israel.”
The United States did not create Israel, the Israelis argue, according to the correspondent. “The United States delegation at the United Nations was in favor of a trusteeship for Palestine at the time the state was proclaimed and the United States only recognized a fait accomplish” the Israelis say.
The New York Times has so far made no editorial comment on Mr. Dulles’ speech. But other New York newspapers, particularly the New York Herald-Tribune, have expressed the opinion that the policies sketched out by Mr. Dallas will play an important role in improving the situation in the Middle East. The New York Daily News said that “the job of patching up a peace between the Israelis and the Arabs is properly one for the United Nations.”
