Israel’s Knesset passed a resolution backing further settlement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In a 26-8 vote on the “road map” peace plan, the Knesset voted this week that the West Bank and Gaza Strip are not occupied territory, “neither historically, according to international law, nor according to political agreements signed by Israel.” Most representatives in the 120-member Parliament did not vote on the matter. The vote was taken while Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who recently blasted Israel’s “occupation” of Palestinian areas, was overseas.
