Premier Mussolini was quoted today as declaring that “Jews will never be persecuted in Italy so long as they obey the laws as do other Italian citizens.”
Generoso Pope, publisher of Italian-American newspapers, who was decorated in Rome by King Victor Emmanuel, spoke of Il Duce’s attitude toward the Jews after his return on the Rex yesterday.
Mr. Pope, who interviewed the Premier, quoted him as follows:
“Jews will never be persecuted in Italy so long as they obey the laws as do other Italian citizens. You can tell their brethren in America that Jews in Italy will always be given the same consideration and treatment as other Italian citizens.”
He said the Premier was “never more emphatic.”
