Another shipment of medical and surgical supplies provided by the Joint Distribution Committee for refugees from Poland now stranded in Russia will soon leave New York for the U.S.S.R., it was announced here today by Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C. The new transport includes full equipment for the establishment of six base hospitals.
In making this announcement, Mr. Hyman pointed out that the J.D.C. is collaborating with the Polish Government-in-Exile in a non-sectarian relief program for some 2,000,000 Polish refugees who are scattered throughout Siberia. Turkestan and other parts of Soviet Asia. “Since the beginning of 1942,” he said, “the J.D.C. has appropriated nearly $400,000 to purchase medical supplies, surgical equipment and concentrated food products for shipment to the Polish refugees in Russia on Russian vessels, freight and duty free.” He added that the J.D.C. has received repeated acknowledgements of the receipt of the supplies, which are dispatched to the Polish Embassy in Kuibyshev for reallocation to more than 300 local distribution committees throughout Asiatic Russia. The committees, non-sectarian in their composition, are made up of Polish nationals. “To the best of our knowledge,” Mr. Hyman stated, “no shipment has been lost.”
