Premier Golda Meir and members of her Cabinet joined Mayor Teddy Kollek, members of the City Council and more than 100 guests at the Jerusalem Post’s modern plant on the city’s outskirts to celebrate the 40th anniversary yesterday of the founding of Israel’s only English-language daily newspaper. The Jerusalem Post began publishing in Dec. 1932 as the Palestine Post, under the editorship of its founder, the late Gershon Agron (Agronsky). It changed its name when Israel proclaimed its independence on May 14,1948. The Post is one of the many subscribers to the JTA news service in Israel.
Mrs. Meir recalled the paper’s role in the struggle of the Jewish community in Palestine for independence. She related how she visited Agron’s office almost every night during 1946-47 to find out what was happening in the world. The guests were taken on guided tours of the newspaper’s modern plant, one of the largest in Israel, and each was presented with a gift reproduction of the paper’s May 16,1948 edition reporting the founding of the Jewish State.
