Eli Eliachar, head of the Sephardic community in Jerusalem, who has just completed a two-month visit in Argentina where he conducted a campaign on behalf of Jews living in Arab countries, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that many Jews in Egypt and other Moslem countries who are charged with being Zionists are being imprisoned.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the fact that there is only one Sephardic representative to the Provisional Government of Israel, Eliachar said one member did not adequately represent the “25 percent of the population who are Sephardim.” He stressed, nonetheless, that all Jews should support the Israeli Government until it is solidly established. Then, he said, “free and democratic elections should take place.”
Eliashar’s mission, which he combined with a special effort among this country’s 60,000 Sephardic Jew for the Keren Hayesod, was described here is highly successful. He expects to return to Jerusalem soon.
