During the month of February, eighty-two Jewish Sabbath observers charged with violating the Sunday law were defended by the Jewish Sabbath Alliance of America, it was announced by the Alliance.
Most of those were defended in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bronx courts, the statement declares. Among them were butchers, grocers, shoe repairers, tailors, laundrymen and dry goods dealers. They were defended by the counsel of the Alliance, Gustave S. Drachman, Herman Koenigsberg and Meyer Machlis.
In all cases the defendants were saved from paying fines, according to the announcement. The Alliance has induced State Senator Mandelbaum to introduce a bill in Albany, whereby observers of the Jewish Sabbath will be permitted to conduct their business on Sunday without interference.
