A number of Jewish athletes were attacked, one injured seriously and loss of life narrowly averted when supporters of a rival Polish Team, Lebia, assaulted the Maccabi team which was victorious in a match, which took place in Tomashovmazoviezk.
When the Maccabi emerged victorious, supporters of the Polish team assumed a threatening attitude. One of the Jewish athletes, hoping to frighten them off, fired a revolver into the air.
Infuriated by this act, they fell upon the Jewish athletes and beat them so severely that only the timely arrival of the police prevented loss of life.
The Jewish athlete thereupon hid in cloak-rooms, and when they thought the danger had passed emerged from concealment. They were greeted with stones however, one of which seriously injured a member of the team.
Funeral services were held in Paterson, N. J. for Mrs. Mary Cohen, 105 years old, believed to be the oldest Jewish resident in the state and possibly in the East. Since 1927 she was an inmate of the Daughters of Miriam Home for the Aged. She was born in Russia and when fifty-nine years old, came to this country with her husband.
