Lionel de Rothschild, president of the Jewish War Memorial, presiding over a meeting of the Council of the War Memorial at Jews’ College tonight, suggested the establishment of a Communal Center in London—a scheme the general principles of which he had discussed with Mr. Japhet, chairman of Jews’ College Council, and Sir Robert Waley Cohen. He said that as a result of their discussion a suggestion was made which might possibly be advantageous to everybody—the Jewish War Memorial could appeal for funds for a building; they could build it and then arrange to lease part of it to Jews’ College who would be their own masters in the building—but the building itself; the funds for the building, the management, the letting and the equipment of the building should be done by the Jewish War Memorial.
If the Jewish War Memorial does construct the building—it would be a Communal Center—it might, he said, be necessary to ask for more money for other purposes as it would be the center of Jewish religious activity in the Jewish community in England. It might also be necessary to add some name to show that it was a War Memorial when it started but was now a religious memorial for peace, he concluded.
