A Jewish community center on France’s world-renowned “Cote d’Azur” has opened in Cannes. The new community center was built by joint efforts of this country’s central communal organization, the United Jewish Philanthropic Fund (FSJU) and the American Joint Distribution Committee. The center was inaugurated by Baron Alain de Rothschild, president of the Central Consistory of French Jews, the French Chief Rabbi, Dr. Jacob Kaplan, and the Secretary-General of the FSJU, Edgar Abravanel. The center will cater to the needs of the local Jewish community, which has nearly doubled in size during the last two years, due to the immigration of Algerian Jews and to the numerous foreign visitors who come to the south of France every summer. Cannes’ current Jewish community numbers some 1,500 people.
