Jewish leaders and legal scholars remembered retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun as a staunch defender of religious freedom and the separation of church and state. Blackmun was “one of the most eloquent defenders of America’s core concept of fundamental liberties and freedom who has ever sat on the Supreme Court,” said Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Blackmun died at 90 from complications following hip replacement surgery.
