Franz Boas, the Jewish anthropologist of Columbia University, in New York, has donated to Germany his famous scientific library for the erection of an ethnological museum in Hamburg, the Berlin press reports to-day.
Professor Boas was born on July 9th., 1858 in Minden, Westphalia, and was educated in the Universities of Heidelberg, Bonn and Kiel. He was the Assistant Director of the Royal Ethnographical Museum and Professor of Geography in the University of Berlin. Later he was one of the Directors of the Department of Anthopology at the Chicago Exposition, a Lecturer at Columbia University and Curator of the Department of Antropology at the American Museum of Natural History. He is the author of many scientific works and a member of a number of Anthropological Societies in Berlin, Brussels, Florence, Moscow, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, and Washington.
Professor Boas is also a Senator of the German Academy of Munich and Honorary Fellow of the Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland and of the Folklore Society of London.
