University of Toronto officials notified the Canadian Jewish Congress today that Jewish students will be permitted to register after the official registration dates, which coincide with the two days of Rosh Hashanah, without penalty. Similar arrangements for Jewish students also were reported for McGill University and the School for Teachers at MacDonald College in Montreal.
The University of Toronto agreed to the special arrangements after the Congress called to the attention of school officials the date conflict. Jewish students will be allowed to register September 23 and 24 without the late registration fee of $10 if they indicate they do so for religious reasons. Students affected will be those entering the first year in the Arts and Sciences and Applied Science and Engineering faculties.
The Teachers School at MacDonald College scheduled activity tests for the opening day of lectures coinciding with the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Arrangements have been made to give the tests to Jewish students at another suitable time. Recognition has always been given in the Teachers School for Jewish students to be absent on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. An announcement to this effect will be made when all students are convened at the first assembly of the school on September 18.
