Two battles between Jewish young men and members of the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano took place in the old Jewish quarter in this city last night and early this morning, resulting in the hospitalization of some of the neo-fascists.
The fighting started early in the evening when two automobiles carrying MSI electioneering groups passed through the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter. Young Jews attacked the occupants of the cars, beating them up and causing their hospitalization. A few hours later, after midnight, the MSI headquarters, located near the Jewish quarter, dispatched three more automobiles with their followers. The caravan carried emblems of the MSI. The Jewish young men attacked again. This time, the fighting was stopped after appeals for an end to the altercation by the Rome chief of police and by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff.
