Jews occupy third place in numerical strength in the total population of Yakutsk, Siberia, which has about 50,000 inhabitants, the New York Times reports today in a cable from its correspondent in the USSR who is currently touring Soviet Siberia.
The correspondent reports that “the Jewish element in Yakutia is not small.” He quotes the director of the State Pedagogical Institute in Yakutsk as stating that in this teaching institute Yakuts provide more than half of the student body, Russians the next largest group and Jews the third largest.
