Junior Ort Women to Run Ort Tool Supply Company for a Day

To come closer to the workings of the industrial relief program carried out by the Ort for destitute Jews abroad, the young women who form the Junior Ort, will take over for today, the Ort Tool Supply Company, at 331 Madison Avenue. They will run the business, which buys machinery from American manufacturers, ships it to destitute Jewish families in countries of Eastern Europe, and receives payment, frequently on the instalment plan, from Americans who order the equipment for their impoverished kin abroad.

Mrs. Ruth Berke, president of the young women’s group, will be in charge of “Junior Ort Day” today. She will be assisted by her fellow officers, Miss Rose Katz, vice-president; Miss Katherine Frank, Miss Billie Wachstetter, and Miss Sylvia Lack, secretaries; and Miss Elita Frankel, treasurer; and Miss Laura Kline, Miss Jeanne Gingold, and Miss Min Rich.

Part of the young people’s work today will consist in explaining to American residents who wish to send machines to their relatives abroad, how to instruct their distant kin to make applications for the machinery in the towns in Eastern Europe, where they live. They must set forth the kind of machine they want, their need of a means of earning a living, and what industry they intend to enter.

The Tool Supply Company is one of the agencies of the American Ort, the Society for the Promotion of Agricultural and Technical Trades among the Jews of Eastern Europe, to relieve destitution abroad through industrialization rather than charity. Funds to finance it come from the Ort Campaign for Industrial Reconstruction, of which Howard S. Cullman, Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York, is national chairman, and Paul Felix Warburg, national treasurer.
