Klaus Barbie, the “butcher of Lyon,” is physically and mentally fit to stand trial, three medical experts have told investigating magistrate Christian Riss. Barbie, the Lyon gestapo chief during World War II, is expected to go on trial this fall on half a dozen charges of “crimes against humanity.” The three expects who examined Barbie 12 times, sometimes for hours on end, reported that he “shows no remorse or regret” and refuses to discuss his wartime activities.
