Dr. Wilhelm Kleemann, former general manager of the Dresdener Bank (Bank of Dresden) and leader of the Berlin Jewish community, sailed yesterday on the Olympic for a short visit in the United States.
Dr. Kleemann is a well-known philanthropist and is particularly interested in the work of the ORT, organization for the promotion of technical trades and agriculture among the Jews of Eastern Europe. Before embarking on his present trip Dr. Kleemann, who is president of the ORT reconstruction fund, told a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that his time in the United States would be principally devoted to the work of the ORT.
“The sufferings of the Jews during the last few years have clearly shown the necessity for mutual help,” Dr. Kleemann said. The situation is gravest in Eastern and Central Europe and requires united and immediate relief effort, he declared, indicating that since Jewish institutions in many countries are losing the help of the governments of those countries it was imperative to strengthen the work of organizations such as the ORT, which has done much to help German Jewish youth in its present distress.
Dr. Kleemann expects to confer with many Jewish leaders upon his arrival in New York.
