Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Parliament of Israel began today with a special review of the new detachment of Knesset guards, which made its first appearance today. Smartly dressed in blue uniforms, the detachment includes 24 men and one 22-year-old blonde, to deal with women suspects.
Establishment of the new guard unit was recommended by a special committee which drafted security measures for the Knesset after the hand grenade attack in Parliament last year which resulted in the wounding of five ministers, including Premier David Ben Gurion. The guards have all completed regular military service plus a special commando course and have signed up for a two-year period of service.
