Crown Kosher Supermarket, which won a federal court ruling against being closed Sundays by the Massachusetts Lord’s Day laws, was open for business today by permission of the Springfield police.
A panel of three federal judges in Boston ruled last week that the constitutional rights of the supermarket corporation had been violated by the enforcement of the state law. Herbert B. Ehrman, of Boston, president of the American Jewish Committee. served as attorney for the supermarket in the test case which is likely to go to the United States Supreme Court for a final ruling.
The supermarket contended that the laws discriminated against Jews who observe Saturday as their Sabbath and against kosher stores which are closed Saturdays as a matter of religious principle. The state Attorney General’s office was studying the ruling for a possible appeal to the Supreme Court. The market is being allowed to stay open Sundays by an agreement with Police Chief Raymond P. Gallagher of this city pending further court action.
