A number of leading Latin American delegations will demand that the representatives of all major religions be heard by the U.N. Political Committee on the fate of Jerusalem, it was learned here today. Meanwhile, several Latin American delegations were known to be studying Pope Pius’ latest pronouncement on the protection of the Holy Places in Jerusalem, which omitted all reference to the “internationalization” of the city.
The U.N. Conciliation Commission this week-end delayed its answer to the Israel demand that the Commission assist it in direct negotiations with the Arab states. The Commission, which has already drafted its reply and which had been prepared to release the reply yesterday, is waiting until later this week, possibly until after the meeting in Washington tomorrow between Assistant Secretary of State James E. Webb and the representatives of the Arab states.
The conference of Arab representatives at the State Department is not for the purpose of considering an “Atlantic Pact for the Middle East,” Dr. Charles Malik, Lebanese delegate at the U.N., asserted this week-end. However, Dr. Malik declined to reveal why the Arabs had requested the conference or what would be discussed.
