The success of Dr. Ion G. Duca, Liberal leader, in forming a new Roumanian cabinet, may mean a serious blow to the growth of the anti-Semitic movement here according to the Liberal press, which indicates that the fall of the Vaida-Voivod cabinet was largely due to King Carol’s displeasure with Vaida-Voivod’s tacit support of the Nazi movement.
Vaida-Voivod went so far as actually to subsidize the anti-Semitic movement, the Liberal press charges, supplying Nazi troops with uniforms which had been ordered for them in quantity lots.
Dr. Duca was unable to form a cabinet including M. Bratiano, once virtual dictator of the kingdom, and is expected to try to form a Liberal cabinet. Should he fail, the possibility of a general election is foreseen.
In the event of a general election, Deputy Meyer Ebner, member of the parliament and prominent Jewish leader, points out, the anti-Semitic parties might receive as high as forty percent of the vote. In this case, King Carol, who last week showed his displeasure at Cuzist anti-Semitic tactics by refusing to attend a reception at the Cuzist dormitory at the University of Jassy, would have little alternative but to invite Professor Alexander Cuza to form a cabinet.
Cuza as premier, would be as great a calamity for the Jews of Roumania as Hitler as chancellor has been to the Jews of Germany, since he is the most violent anti-Semitic leader in the country.
Liberals count, however, on King Carol’s strong support of Dr. Duca and the suppression of anti-Semitic agitation as well as of Fascist tendencies generally.
