There were no bad intentions behind omission of minorities clauses in the new Lithuanian constitution, which goes into effect Feb. 16, a delegation of Jewish leaders was told by President Smetona. A paragraph safeguarding minorities rights might be included, the President declared, assuring the delegation of continuation of tolerance and the traditional Jewish-Lithuanian friendship.
The Jewish community has petitioned Parliament for inclusion of clauses contained in the old constitution, which gave national minorities cultural autonomy, the right to have their own administrative bodies and the right to share State and Municipal expenditures for education and social aid.
It was announced here that the Jewish Agency for Palestine has accepted the Lithuanian Governments invitation to participate in celebrations of the Republic’s twentieth anniversary Feb. 16. The Jewish Agency has named Rabbi Mordecai Nurok of Riga as its representative.
