Louis Rittenberg, for 40 years a leading Jewish writer in this country, who wrote and edited books and prominent journals in English, Hungarian and Yiddish, died here yesterday at the age of 70. He had been editor of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, executive member of the Jewish Book Council of America, editor of Liberal Judaism and the Overseas Sentinel, and on the staff of the Israel Bond Organization.
At the time of his death, he was at work on revising the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia. He was born in Hungary and brought to the United States by his parents in 1906. He was educated in Pittsburgh and Chicago. In 1920, he joined the staff of the American Hebrew, later becoming that periodical’s editor-in-chief.
