Major Jewish organizations this week-end lauded President Truman for signing last Friday the new DP Act which will permit the admission of 341,000 DP immigrants by June 30, 1951, including the 150,000 who entered since July, 1948. The bill also eliminates several clauses in the DP Immigration Act of 1948 which the President called discriminatory.
Hailing the President’s action, Walter H. Bieringer, President of United Service for New Americans, declared that Mr. Truman’s “signature on the new DP Act is a further reaffirmation of the American people’s devotion to the principles of human dignity and freedom. The President, as well as many legislators in Congress who fought long and valiantly to secure passage of the DP Act, are owed a vote of thanks by all liberty-loving Americans.”
