Nazi Field Marshal Erich von Mannstein, who was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in 1949 by a British court which convicted him of responsibility in the commission of war crimes, will formally complete his sentence next month. However, Von Mannstein has been free on a medical leave since last August.
The Nazi general was found guilty of knowledge about, and command responsibility for, Gestapo extermination units which butchered hundreds of thousands of Jews. His sentence was later reduced to 12 years, and with time off for good behavior and counting his post-war internment the sentence will officially be completed next month.
Ex-Nazi leader Otto Strasser today won a court decision in Cologne to recover his citizenship. The court ruled that the Federal Minister of Interior is compelled under the Bonn Constitution to restore citizenship to Germans banned by Hitler. Strasser, now in exile in Canada, was a powerful Nazi politician who left Germany following a split with Hitler on internal policy.
