A mass meeting of the Association of Jewish Victims of Nazi Persecution heard a plea to Australians today to join in the worldwide campaign to persuade West Germany to extend its statute of limitations beyond next May 8.
Sen. Sam Cohen, addressing the meeting at the Martyrs Monument of the Carlton Cemetery, said the appeal to West Germany was not made in a spirit of revenge but in the name of the countless men, women and children destroyed by the “hideous Nazi war machine and could not speak for themselves.” The West German Parliament is scheduled to begin debate of an extension next week.
Prior to the meeting, Jewish youth groups, clad in school uniforms, paraded in trucks and busses, carrying appropriate slogans, through the crowded city to the Martyrs Monument.
