Israel’s 23rd anniversary was celebrated here and in other large South African cities at mass rallies organized by the South African Zionist Federation. At the Wanderers Stadium here, former Chief Rabbi Dr. Louis Rabinowitz, now a city councilor in Jerusalem, stressed Israel’s determination to achieve a full and effective peace settlement based on direct negotiations. Civic greetings were given by the Mayor of Johannesburg and local officials. Special services at all the main synagogues, attended by large congregations, were conducted prior to the anniversary celebrations.
