David Rome, head librarian at the Jewish Public Library, Montreal, has been appointed a lecturer in the Department of Religion in the Faculty of Arts at McGill University. He will lecture on “The Development of the Jewish Tradition. ” It will be a credit course for a bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Arts.
The McGill Department of Religion has no connection with any of the schools of divinity at the university. The subject that Mr. Rome will teach is one of several similar courses offered by the Department of Religion. There is a corresponding course on the development of the Christian tradition, a course on the Bible, and courses on other religious traditions.
Mr. Rome, former correspondent here for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, served on the staff of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and edited “Canadian Jews in World War II. ” He also produced a selected bibliography of Jewish Canadians, and an outline of Jews in Canadian literature. Outside the Jewish community, he has been active in cultural projects. Recently, the Provincial Government appointed him to the Arts Council of the Quebec Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Mr. Rome speaks fluently in English, French and Yiddish.
