Members of the Bavarian Government and other local notables today addressed a meeting here sponsored by five German scholars in the interests of “reconciliation with the Jews.” The meeting was a part of the student contribution to “Jewish Reconciliation Week” which starts here March 10.
In the Bavarian city of Bayreuth a special ceremony was held this week to rededicate the local synagogue which was desecrated last December when German customs officials invaded the synagogue and handled the Holy Ark in a search for “black market goods.” Later, the Bavarian authorities apologized for the behavior of the searchers.
The noted German Jewish actor Fritz Kortner was received by West German President Theodor Heuss in Bonn this week. Kortner explained his plans for touring the United States with a troupe of German actors. From Stuttgart it was reported that there were many Jews among a group of needy German refugee artists in Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland and the United States who received some of the benefits of a fund of 13,000 deutschemarks raised by the South German Radio.
