More than 140 Israeli academics, artists and public figures signed a petition calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem as its capital. The signatories said the petition was crafted to ensure “serious discussion” of the peace process at the start of Israel’s election campaign. The signatories included author A.B. Yehoshua, former Meretz Party leader Shulamit Aloni and Matanya Ben Artzi, the premier’s brother-in-law.
