Mass round-ups and executions of Jews were still continuing in the Nazi-occupied Ukraine more than half a year after the Germans had seized the territory, it was revealed today by two eye-witnesses, Genia Vinnikova and her daughter Celia, who recently escaped from the town of Novozibkovo in the Kiev district.
In the nearby town of Unich, the women relate, the Germans, in March of this year, drove seventy Jewish families – consisting mainly of women, aged men and children – into a wrecked house and kept them there without food in the freezing cold for several days. Those who did not die of exposure were subsequently shot.
In Novozibkov, Mrs. Vinnikova said, the Germans gathered together all the Jewish men in the town shortly after they arrived. After being humiliated and tortured, the Jews were taken to anti-tank pit at the edge of the town and shot. Later entire Jewish families were ordered to appear at a certain place. The young women and girls were violated by the Nazi soldiers and then tortured and mutilated before being flung into shallow pits. Following the now familiar Nazi pattern the fascists did not bother to shoot the children but threw them into the graves alive, allowing them to suffocate.
