A summit meeting of Arab League states, to discuss united Arab action if Israel proceeds with plans to divert the Jordan River, was urged yesterday by President Nasser of Egypt, it was reported here today from Cairo.
Dr. Sayed Nofal, assistant secretary-general of the League, who received President Nasser’s proposal, said he would transmit the message immediately to the 13 Arab governments. Israel had announced it would proceed to tap the river through a massive Lake Tiberias system, to irrigate the Negev. Nasser said the matter was of “vital importance” to the Arabs, and that the proposed meeting should be held in Cairo “as soon as possible.” He said that grave political problems, and not only an issue of “Arab defense,” were involved.
