Dr. Ernst Schmidt, a former Nazi doctor who appeared as a defense witness at the Belsen trial here today, was detained, pending investigation, by the British security police after he was recognized as one of the Gestapo doctors who tortured Jews in the notorious Majdanek Camp in Poland.
The Nazi doctor denied the charge of the prosecution that he worked at the Majdanek camp. He said he had served as a doctor in a Lithuanian guard unit stationed in Lublin and was “doctor for the troops in barracks in the town.”
