A nice new set of greased skids, the Jewish Daily Bulletin learned on the best possible authority yesterday, is in place for C. K. Froehlich, erstwhile power in Greater New York’s Nazidom by dint of his presidencies of the German-American Conference, the United German Societies and the DAWA, which was organized for the purpose of an anti-Jewish boycott.
Froehlich has been slipping for some time, and his public utterances have become increasingly more querulous and less self-assured, but the final blow to his influence in Nazi circles came yesterday, when someone delivered a nasty blow below the belt and knocked the gentleman for a row of swastika arm-bands.
The foul, which left its recipient groggy and hanging on the ropes, took the form of an innocent-looking little story which appeared in nearly every metropolitan newspaper yesterday to the effect that the recently formed political committee of the German-American Conference has endorsed Karl G. Nischk of Forest Hills, Queens, as an independent candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District.
Before going any further, let it here be known that all members of the committee, including Mr. Froehlich, denied, in long, loud yelps, that any such endorsement had been made.
Nischk, it appeared, was responsible for the story, which he released to the press, so far as could be learned, in the sincere belief that it was true. So convinced was he that he had been assured the committee’s backing that he even opened campaign headquarters.
