A new Jewish colony was formally launched today in the Beisan area along the Jordan River, one of the most dangerous, bandit-infested sections of all Palestine.
The colony was started by two groups of workers calling themselves Irgunei Hatzafon, Hebrew for “Groups of the North,” on land leased from the Jewish National Fund, land-purchasing agency for the Jewish people.
To guard against possible bandit attacks, the dangerously located colony has been surrounded by fortifications. Workers from all over the Jezreel Valley helped in construction of a stone wall and a water tower equipped for observation.
Forty families from Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia and Germany form the vanguard of the settlers. All have been trained as farm workers.
