In accordance with a recent decision of the Bavarian parliament, the Bavarian government has submitted a bill to parliament which prohibits slaughtering without previously stunning the animal, which practically means a ban on schechita. German Jewish circles are depressed because the Bavarian government, which had previously been of the opinion that a schechita ban was unconstitutional has now abandoned that stand and given assurances that the bill will be passed. The Jews also fear that this will affect the status of schechita throughout Germany.
