Temple Emanu-El of this city was determined to provide Passover food for any Jews in the Hudson County Jail and Penitentiary. The temple treasury donated one hundred dollars, a member subscribed five dollars additional and a committee, consisting of Ben A. Rosen, Rabbi Isaac Siegel and Samuel Harber, president of the congregation, was sent to investigate the number of persons to be cared for.
Last night at a meeting the committee returned the money to the congregation, declaring that there were no Jewish prisoners either in the jail or penitentiary.
However, the matter has developed into an issue, for some newspapermen insist that official records show four Jewish prisoners confined in the jail and ten in the penitentiary. The natives confess they are puzzled over developments. In other words, are there, or are there not, any Jewish prisoners in the county?
