In the same court where he was convicted nineteen years ago for the murder of an aged Glasgow woman, the re-trial of Oscar Slater to vindicate him for the crime for which sufficient evidence was not presented started today.
Slater was then condemned to death, but as the result of the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. After serving eighteen years in Peterhead Prison. Slater was released following the ruling of a parliamentary committee which investigated the case, that a re-trial be granted.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who has worked untiringly all these years for the sake of justice, was present at the preliminary proceedings. The appeal proper will begin tomorrow.
