United Nations Acting Secretary-General Benjamin Cohen tonight stated that the assassination of U.N. mediator Count Folke Bernadotte did not void the Palestine truce “The truce will continue,” he said Mr. Cohen further stated that the news had been received both at the U.N. headquarters in Paris and at Lake Success “with a great deal of sadness.”
A statement issued by the U.N. Secretariat reviewed Bernadotte’s role as Palestine mediator following his unanimous choice on May 20 by the representatives of the permanent members of the Security Council, sitting as a committee of the General Assembly.
