The achievements of the Philadelphia Federation of Jewish Charities will be commemorated June 3, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Federation.
The quarter century anniversary will be observed by a dinner at which Judge Horace Stern, president of the Federation, will preside. One thousand guests are expected. Addresses will be made by Rabbi Abba H. Silver of Cleveland, Fanny Hurst and Arthur Brisbane.
Two aspects of the anniversary are deemed by the leaders of the Federation especially worthy of remembrance: One is that only two other American cities preceded Philadelphia in achieving federation of the Jewish charities–Cincinnati and Chicago. Another is that no city is giving so generously in proportion to population for Jewish charities as Philadelphia, according to the report of Jacob Billikopf, executive director of the Federation. Chicago, with a million more inhabitants than Philadelphia, and with 75,000 more Jews, gives $50,000 to $100,000 a year less than Philadelphia to its Federation. New York, with six times as many Jews as Philadelphia, raises for its Jewish federation only two and a half times as much money as this city.
