For the first time since the Sunday closing law went into effect, forcing Jewish storekeepers to keep closed two days if they were Sabbath observers, the Polish government yielded to Jewish protests and announced that the Jewish butchers and grocers will be permitted to open their stores on three Sundays, before Rosh Hashonah, Succoth and Hoshana Rabba.
Jewish storekeepers had protested that under the law they would be compelled to close on Friday and not reopen their stores until the following Wednesday, since Rosh Hashonah is celebrated on Monday and Tuesday, September 10 and 11.
