The “Work of Redemption” carried on by Captain Arthur Carlos de Barros Basto among the Portuguese Marranos has among other results, led to the formation of the first Zionist Society. This Society, which bears the name of Judah Halevi and desires to be affiliated with the Zionist Organization, has as one of its objects “the establishment of a more fraternal intimacy between Israelites in general and the Marranos in particular.”
The President is Senhor Eduardo Jernstedt de Almeida; the Treasurer, Senhor Serafim Xavier; and the Secretary, Senhor Fortunato Martins de Barros.
A Shekel group was formed by the Marranos at Braganca in honor of Paul Goodman’s visit to them in 1931.
