Huge posters put up all over Jerusalem today cautioned Jewish inhabitants of the city against being misled by an extremist Jewish religious sect which is accused of planning to create disorders and disturbances when representatives of the U.N. Conciliation Commission’s economic survey mission arrive here next week.
Headlined “So The People Will Know,” and signed by a newly organized group of “religious youth,” the posters violently attack the small sect of religious zealots who are known as the Neturay Karta, or “Guardians of the City.”
Describing the sect as a fifth column, the posters charge that its leaders, “who are agents of the British and King Abdullah of Transjordan,” intend to organize a demonstration in favor of internationalization of the entire city. Members of Neturay Karta have always opposed the concept of Zionism and of a Jewish state, believing that a Jewish state could only be revived after the coming of the Messiah.
The unprecedented attack on them by a group of equally orthodox but less fanatical youths is apparently intended to forestall any major effort by the Neturay Karta adherents to influence the new United Nations mission. The posters also call on the government to investigate the group and its “financial backers and patrons.”
