Only seventeen percent of the Jewish population is entitled to participate in the forthcoming Kehillah elections. This represents a reduction of 1,000 from 1924, when 35,000 participated.
The reason for the decrease in the voting power was given as the prevailing poverty among the Jewish population, many of whom are unable to to meet the Kchillah taxes. A demand has been put forth by the middle class parties for a change in the constitution to permit all members of the Jewish community to vote.
