French withdrawal from the Berlin Olympics is imminent, it was being widely predicted in sports circles here today.
Sportsmen, however, were warned by Armand Massard, chairman of the French Olympic Association, not to intervene. He declared that withdrawal was entirely dependent on the Government’s decision.
Meanwhile, heated discussion of the issue, given new life by Roichsfuehrer Hitler’s repudiation of the Locarno Treaty, is proceeding in the French press.
The noted writer Claude Farrere today printed a strong demand for withdrawal.
L’Oevre, radical morning paper, urges withdrawal both from the Olympics and participation in the 550 anniversary celebration of Heidelberg University.
The leading sports newspaper, L’Auto, takes a stand unreservedly for participation and quotes Count Baillet-Latour, chairman of the International Olympic Committee, on route to Japan, who said “We can not modify our attitude. Only war can prevent the Berlin games.”
