Premier Julius Goemboes, erstwhile anti-Semitic leader, is going out of his way since his selection as Premier, to invite the cooperation of the Jewish elements in Hungary.
For the third time within a week, Premier Goemboes, speaking before Parliament today, has made overtures to the Jews. Premier Goemboes said: “My Agrarian Party is proud of the equality rights it has granted to deserving Jewish citizens.”
At the same time he warned against the misuse of so-called Christian slogans for political campaigning.
This new friendliness toward Jews on the part of the Premier drew the wrath of a Nazi deputy, Mesco, at today’s session, who criticized him for “his all too generous forgiveness of the Jews.”
Another anti-Semite, Wolff, member of the Christian Socialist Party, and the leader of the opposition to the government, Gastogal, scored Premier Goemboes for keeping silent on the government’s plans for the Christian population while presenting its policy toward the Jews.
To this latter criticism, the Premier replied impatiently, “It is unnecessary to stress the obvious.”
A precise definition of future government attitude toward the numerus clausus was demanded by a Jewish deputy, Vaszony.
Premier Goemboes, however, made no reply to this latter demand.
